But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8 (NKJV)
Jesus is on the cross. The pain is excruciating. His hands and feet are bleeding. The crown of thorns on His head causes him even more pain. Around Him, Roman soldiers and many Jews make fun of Him.
Jesus still has time to abort the mission. He can use His divine power, rip His enemies apart and free Himself. Instead, Jesus chooses to die for the same people who are slapping, kicking and mocking Him.
If you were in Christ’s situation, with divine power at your disposal, would you have died for the ungrateful crowd? Paul says, “For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die.” (Romans 5:7).
The human mind cannot comprehend this kind of love. Our sacrifice and love for others are normally dependent on what others can do for us in return. We love those who love us. We help those who help us.
“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8 (NKJV). That is how different God’s love is from ours. He loved the unlovable. His love is unconditional.
When Christ came after us, we may not have been aware we were sinners or that we needed Christ. He looked for us. He continues to pursue us even when we rebel against Him.
Therefore, “Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your heart…” (Hebrews 3:15).
Jesus, thank You for loving and pursuing me despite my rebelliousness. Teach me how to love You back.
If really the love God has for us we give back in the same magnitude, the world would be transformed
Quite true, Pastor. We need reciprocate this love to God and humanity.
