Love Without Hypocrisy

Daily Devotional – Monday, March 29, 2021

Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good.

Romans 12:9 (NKJV)

In the days before modern communication and social media, romance and letter writing were inseparable. A well-thought-out and carefully written letter could take a relationship to the next level.

A young man masterfully crafted a love letter to his girlfriend. He promised to meet the girl at their usual spot that evening. At the bottom of the page, he dedicated to his lover a song titled I Will Cross the Ocean for You.

Before sealing the letter in a flowery envelope, he added, PS: I will not come if it rains. What a way to kill a passionate message! If you can cross the ocean for her, what is rain that you should fear walking in?

Human love is often insincere. It is big on promises but selfish with action. Paul’s letter to the church in Rome urges, “Let love be without hypocrisy.” (Romans 12:9). In essence, what is expressed in public must reflect the reality in private.

In the same verse, Paul explains, “Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good.” Genuine love detests evil, whether done in public or in private. Similarly, love that is not hypocritical is expressed through good deeds.

The fruit of the Holy Spirit comprises love. For us to exhibit genuine love to others, we must be filled with the Holy Spirit. Only then will we hate evil and love good. Expressing sincere and practical love strengthens our relationships with others.

Today, by the grace of God, demonstrate honest love in words and deeds to a person who cannot pay you back.

Lord Jesus, fill me with your Holy Spirit so that my love for others will be genuine.
