Let each of you look out not only for his own interests but also for the interests of others.
Philippians 2:4 (NKJV)
In First Kings 3:16-28, we read an interesting story of two women fighting over a baby. The two housemates gave birth three days apart, but one of the newborns is dead. No woman is ready to accept that the dead boy belongs to her.
Selfishness Personified
Of course, you know how the story ends. For now, though, think about the dishonest woman. She knows quite well that the dead child is not hers. Why, then, does she plot to steal the other woman’s child, knowing very well she will traumatize the latter?
It all boils down to human selfishness. The average human being wants everything for himself. He will do everything to attract praise and admiration. It does not matter how many people he hurts along the way, as long as all attention turns to him. The heartache and tears of the other person mean nothing. The maxim of the egoist is “Me, Myself and I.”
Me, Myself and I
Not so with Christians, says the Apostle Paul. “Let each of you look out not only for his own interests but also for the interests of others.” (Philippians 2:4). Instead of competing to outdo one another and celebrating the downfall of our rivals, we are to extend love and kindness to them.
Instead of cutting corners and jumping the queues, we must let the weak, sick, and vulnerable go ahead of us. Let us replace selfish competition with mutual assistance, holding out our hands to bring up those who are down. Let us make other people’s problems the subject of our kindness. The attitude of Me, myself, and I is antagonistic to the kingdom of God.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me to look out not only for my own interests but also for the interests of others.

The Unholy trinity of selfishness, Me , myself and I.
Indeed we should be showing concern not only for ourselves but also for the well-being of others.Cultivating empathy and understanding being more compassionate and supportive around us when necessary.
May God help me to always make other people’s problems the subject of my kindness whenever I can.
Thank you, Doc. I think there is an epidemic of selfishness. For example, you will find people taking photos in accident scenes instead of helping save lives.
