Meditate On These Things

Daily Devotional – Sunday, October 15, 2023
Finally, brethren, whatever things are true…meditate on these things.
Philippians 4:8 (NKJV)

Mental health is increasingly a critical concern in the current generation. The number of people seeking psychological therapy is increasing. Moreover, cases of suicide, even among children and youth, are growing.

Think About These Things

Moreover, to escape the troubles surrounding them, individuals binge on movies, video games, and pornography, among other attractions. By distracting their minds, stressed people experience momentary relief from their anxieties.

Unfortunately, whatever harms or corrupts the mind impacts the entire body, making one a slave. To reverse the impacts of mental health, therefore, we need to start with the content the mind feeds on. A clean spring will produce clean water, and vice versa.

Let Your Mind Dwell on These Things

Apostle Paul was not a mental therapist, but he understood the formula for optimal psychological wellbeing when he wrote, “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.” (Philippians 4:8).

In essence, the apostle urges Christians to choose carefully what they allow into their minds if they are to grow spiritually and mentally. If this was true in the First Century with its relatively rudimentary technology, how truer is it in the Twenty-First Century with its fast-speed internet and instant access to information, including obscene content?

Meditate On These Things

The believer must choose, deliberately, to ponder issues that are “true, noble, just, pure, lovely, of good report, virtuous, and praiseworthy.” Only then can he or she experience the peace that surpasses understanding (read Philippians 4:7). For optimal mental health, build your life around the Word of God.

Your mental health is paramount because your mind is the seat of thoughts, feelings, and emotions. The process of spiritual transformation begins here. Guard your mind by meditating on these things—the ones that are positive, godly, and virtuous. Make your mental health a priority.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me to meditate on things that please You and build me up.
