Meditate on These Things

Daily Devotional – Thursday, November 14, 2024
…if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.
Philippians 4:8 (NKJV)

The competition for the human mind is immense. Television, radio, newspapers, and social media all want our attention. Each has an issue they want us to think about; they even seek our consent. God, on the other hand, has a prescription on the content we should meditate on.

Think About These Matters

The mind is the battlefield of the cosmic conflict between God and human beings. The decisions we make have temporal and eternal implications, hence the need to make sober choices. On the other hand, we make decisions based on the influences that we allow into our minds.

The Apostle Paul, well aware of the great importance of safeguarding the mind from ungodly influences, wrote to the church at Philippi:
Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.” Philippians 4:8

Meditate on These Things

Paul presents a criteria or checklist against which we should assess the kind of thoughts we allow into our minds. These guidelines help us to create a home in our minds for the Holy Spirit, thus entrenching the process of godly character transformation. In essence, God is interested in what we choose to feed our minds on.

Today, make a conscious decision to meditate on things that are true, noble, just, pure, lovely, of true report, virtuous, and trustworthy. Watch as your words and actions begin to reflect the character of God.

Prayer
Almighty God, today and always, I choose to meditate on issues that please You. Come and live inside me always.
