Now He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief.
Matthew 13:58 (NKJV)
When Jesus began His ministry, He was like a celebrity in Israel. In one place, however, He was not highly regarded – His home town.
His teachings were met with remarks such as: “Where did this Man get this wisdom and these mighty works? Is this not the carpenter’s son? Is not His mother called Mary? And His brothers … sisters, are they not all with us?” Matthew 13:54-56.
The only unique thing about Jesus’ family was that it was an ordinary one! To them He was just a common villager. They wondered, “Where then did this Man get all these things?” Matthew 13:56.
Consequently, “…they were deeply offended and refused to believe in him.” Matthew 13:57 (NLT). His incisive teachings and spectacular miracles meant nothing to them. “You can lie to those who don’t know you, not to us,” they might have said.
Then came one of the saddest statements in the Bible, “Now He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief.” Matthew 13:58.
Many new believers love Bible teachings. Everything that happens to them is a miracle. They learn new verses and share Biblical truth. However, with the passing of days, their enthusiasm dies down. Christ becomes just another familiar person.
It is possible for us to become so used to Christ that we no longer fear Him? Can we get so used to the Bible that it becomes just another motivational book? Could we be missing out on many mighty miracles because our first love and faith have gone cold?
