Of Stiff Necks and Sudden Destruction

Daily Devotional – Wednesday, March 30, 2022
He who is often rebuked, and hardens his neck, Will suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.
Proverbs 29:1 (NKJV)

n Tuesday, a man escaped death by a whisker after consuming illicit brew. Four others died. On Friday, the man was dead after drinking prohibited alcohol. He could not resist the urge to return to the beer den.

I believe this man was warned severally about his drinking habits. I can imagine his parents, siblings, former teachers and neighbours pleading with him to stop taking alcohol, in vain.

Countless Warnings

Our merciful God is very patient with us. He issues warning after warning to His wayward children. His voice is heard everywhere. His agents include schoolmates, workmates, preachers and total strangers.

If we heed God’s warnings and turn from our evil ways, we experience better lives and God rejoices over our decision. On the other hand, when we ignore His warnings, there are dire consequences.

He Who Hardens his Neck Will Suddenly be Destroyed

We all must heed King Solomon’s counsel: “He who is often rebuked, and hardens his neck, Will suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.” (Proverbs 29:1).

God’s warnings and rebukes emanate from His unfathomable love, according to Proverbs 3:12. “For whom the LORD loves He corrects, just as a father the son in whom he delights.” How can we escape severe punishment if we reject such great love?

Do Not Stiffen Your Neck

Today, if you hear God warning you against thoughts, actions and words that contradict His will, do not make your neck stiff. He knows what is good for you. Ultimately, He wants you to inherit eternal life and not end up in hell.

Prayer
Thank You God, because of Your loving warnings. Give me grace and strength to heed your corrections.
