And Elisha prayed, and said, “LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.”
2 Kings 6:17 (NKJV)
Elisha is a wanted man. The powerful Syrian King wants the prophet captured. Elisha is accused of leaking the secrets of this king to the king of Israel, thus helping Israel escape Syrian military ambushes.
To capture the prophet, the king of Syria sends a powerful army, with horses and chariots. The army arrives at night and surrounds the city of Dothan, where the prophet is. On seeing the militia, Elisha’s servant fearfully exclaims, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?” (v 15).
A calm Elisha assures his assistant, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” (v 16). The prophet walks by faith, not by sight. However, for the sake of his servant, Elisha requests God, “LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” (v 17). Then the young man sees, “horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.”
Like this man, most of us, when confronted by difficulties, only see the power of the enemy. With our human senses and perceptions, we begin to imagine the worst. We exaggerate the threats posed by the enemy instead of the power of God.
We should ask God to open our spiritual eyes so that we see the power and resources He has placed at our disposal. Only by faith are we able to look beyond our discouraging circumstances and see God on the other side of our problems.
God has an answer to the challenges we think we cannot overcome. Like the Psalmist, let us pray, “Open my eyes, that I may see…” (Psalm 119:18).
Prayer
Dear Lord, please open my spiritual eyes that I may see Your powerful hand, working on my behalf.
