When Jesus Calms the Storm

Daily Devotional – Thursday, March 11, 2021

And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.

Mark 4:39 (ESV)

One of the most powerful lessons on calling on and trusting God fully was delivered on a scary stormy night. Christ had spent the day teaching people using parables. As evening approached, the tired Teacher told His disciples, “Let us go across to the other side.” Mark 4:35.

Exhausted, Jesus fell asleep in the stern of the boat. A cushion provided some comfort for Him. Then it happened! A great windstorm arose and threatened to sink the boat. Even the seasoned fishermen-cum-disciples were helpless and terrified.

In their desperation, the tried every trick they knew but failed miserably. Then they woke Jesus up, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” (v 38). How often has a similar cry has escaped your lips, especially in moments of adversity and despair.

A composed Jesus, assumed His divine role, and commanded the storm, “Peace! Be still!” Mark records that “…the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.” (vs 38-39). Suddenly, normalcy and tranquility returned.

Like Christ’s disciples, how many times do we fight losing battles on our own while ignoring Christ? How much stress would we spare ourselves if we called on Him as soon as we encountered challenges?

Thankfully, even when we snub Him and doubt His loving care, He responds when we need Him most. Is there are storm in your life that Jesus needs to calm today? Without Christ, you can do nothing (John 15:5). Call on Christ now. He will calm your tempest.

Father, I am sorry for facing my storms without You. Come now and silence them for me.

Great sermon.

The disciples lived with Jesus, but they underestimated Him. They did see His power apply to their own situation. Sometimes as Christians we are used to Jesus until we run for help somewhere else or forget His mighty saving power. Christ has power to silence stress, diseases, cases, family rungles etc….. As long as we call on His name.
When a squall approaches, lean into the wind and trust God. Shalom
