O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.
Matthew 26:39 (NKJV)
Christ’s work on earth was coming to an end. The time to die for man had arrived. In Gethsemane, as the sins of the whole world weighed upon Him, His human nature dreaded the coming death.
He pleaded with the Father, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me…” (Matthew 26:39). That is how dreadful and heavy the punishment of our sin was on Christ.
However, Jesus knew that the desires of the human nature may sometimes be contrary to God’s will. Therefore, He uttered words that should be part of every prayer we make to God, “Yet not as I will, but as you will.”
Genuine prayer allows God’s purpose to prevail. There are times when we feel that our petitions are important and urgent. We may then believe that God must answer those prayers immediately and exactly as we want.
In such moments, we need to learn from the Son of God. Our prayers must be subjected to the will of the Father. In the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus taught us to tell God, “Thy will be done” (Matthew 6:10 – KJV).
Realize that God often disappoints our desires to give us what we really need. Even the most sincere prayer may contain a seed of selfishness. If God granted some of our requests, we would end up hurt and disappointed.
Whatever you request to God today, remember to tell Him, “do what you want, and not what I want.” (Contemporary English Version).Father, if what I want is against Your will, please don’t give it to me.
It is God’s will to happen everytime.
Many times we have prayed/pushed God to do things to us. But Jesus Christ our elders brother is helping us understand, even if we pray it’s God’s will to be done.
Amen, Pastor
