Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall.
Proverbs 16:18 (NKJV)
I recently watched a fascinating video, that reminded me how dangerous and futile pride is. A boxer was preparing for a professional match. He boasted that his fist had the power to floor his opponent in one blow. The mean-looking fellow was overconfident that he would win the fight.
The Vanity of Conceit
Fast forward to the day of the fight. The braggart entered the ring with swag and looked down menacingly on the opponent. The referee started the fight. It did not last long. The boaster was on the floor, knocked out by the opponent.
Such is pride! It entails being confident in our personal abilities while ignoring the sovereignty of God over our lives. Conceit is what transformed the covering angel, Lucifer, into the evil and murderous Satan.
Lucifer, Arrogance and Satan
Highly gifted and elevated by God above other angels, Satan became covetous. He craved the power and authority that belong to God alone. The creature challenged its Creator, saying, “I will be like the Most High.’ (Isaiah 14:14).
Here are two more verses that depict Lucifer’s fall from grace: “You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created till iniquity was found in you…Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty. You corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor.” (Ezekiel 28:15-17).
How Egotism Blocks God Away
Solomon must have had Lucifer / Satan in mind when he wrote, “Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall.” (Proverbs 16:18). When we think we can operate without God and reject His love, we end up in ruin and shame.
Arrogance keeps God from us because it does not acknowledge its need for divine assistance. A proud person does not subject himself to the correction of brethren, servants of God, and the church. Pride cannot coexist with humility and repentance.
Pride Goes Before Destruction
Unlike the haughty boxer and Satan, we need to continually lose confidence in our personal attributes and abilities and submit ourselves to God. Only Jesus can uproot pride from our hearts. Only He can only save us from destruction in this life and eternal death.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, come and live in me and replace my pride and self-righteousness with Your humility and righteousness.

True…We should not allow pride to flourish in our lives, a secret deadly sin instigated by the devil himself.
May God save me from the sin of pride,in whichever way it takes roots in me, could be overconfidence in my abilities, self-supremacy etc.
Where there’s pride may God give us Humility.
Amen, Doc
