Thus says the LORD… “I am the LORD your God, Who teaches you to profit, Who leads you by the way you should go.
Isaiah 48:17 (NKJV)
An elderly lady once advised me to further my studies, as that was the most important investment in life, according to her. She said her children had lost all their possessions in ethnic clashes, but had later prospered abroad because of their excellent academic credentials.
To her, education was more important than property because no one could take away knowledge and skills once acquired. This belief may explain the massive investment in education by government, families and individuals.
The Bible, though, has a broader understanding of education. Our Heavenly Father would like us to prosper in earthly as well as spiritual matters (Read 3 John 1:2). Therefore, He provides education that makes this ideal attainable.
In Isaiah 48:17-19, God says He teaches us to profit or to benefit. He also instructs us on how we must live. He reminds us that we can thrive in this life and inherit the one to come, if we listen to and obey His instructions.
It is not God’s will that we live miserably today in the hope of a better life in heaven. Similarly, God does not expect us to enjoy the sinful pleasures of this life at the expense of eternity. The Bible and the Holy Spirit reveal to us all we need to know to enjoy both phases of life.
Are you learning from Christ how to prosper? Are you listening to God as He guides you in decision-making? What actions will you take today to ensure you flourish both materially and spiritually?
Prayer
Father God, teach me how to live productively now and how to inherit eternal life.
