He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.
1 John 2:6 (NKJV)
Believers use various strategies to prove they are Christians. Some adorn special attire when they go to places of worship. Any time you meet such a person, you expect him or her to behave in a manner consistent with their professed faith, but that is not always the case.
Demonstrations of Belief
Moreover, some people demonstrate their allegiance to Christ by adorning crucifixes and other symbols of faith. Carrying a cross or having it sewn on clothes ostensibly shows that one is a Christian. Unfortunately, some individuals bear these embodiments of faith but live contrary to Christ’s teachings.
Another method used to prove one is a follower of Christ is giving a personal testimony to a fellow believer. If you meet a person who loves testifying, you expect his or her behaviour to be in tandem with the confession, though there is no guarantee for that.
Walk as Jesus Walked
Is speaking in tongues proof that one is a Christian? Yes, according to some believers. If you cannot express yourself in unknown languages, then you are not full of the Holy Spirit, which ascertains you are not a genuine Christians. Are there people who speak in tongues but live like unbelievers? Be the judge.
What does the Bible teach about proving we are Christians? Apostle John provides the answer when he writes, “He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.” (1 John 2:6). That is the untainted truth!
Character Transformation a Demonstration of Faith
John had the privilege of knowing Jesus personally for more than three years. He knew the character of Jesus – how Christ modelled godliness, honesty, love and purity of character. Therefore, the apostle could, identify the character of Jesus in believers.
To John, we prove we are Christians not be wearing special clothes, carrying symbols of faith or speaking in tongues, but my modeling Christ’s character. While there is nothing fundamentally wrong with any of these practices, genuine character transformation through the indwelling Holy Spirit is what demonstrates our faith in Jesus.
Prove You are a Christian
Suppose the police arrest you for the crime of being a follower of Jesus, would the court find you guilty? Would your character prove you are a Christian or the judge would acquit you? Can those who interact with and know you attest that you walk just as Jesus walked? If not, what changes do you need to make in your life by the grace of God?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, fill me with Your Holy Spirit and transform me to the extent that my character will prove I am a Christian.
