Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice.
Philippians 4:9 (NIV)
The Bible is arguably the most popular and famous book on earth. It has the most beneficial and transformative content, even when contrasted with other major religious books. There is a catch, though. How helpful the Bible will be to you depends on how effectively, we put into practice its teachings.
These Things Do
While in a Roman prison awaiting his sentence, the apostle Paul wrote a letter to the believers in Philip, in which he broached the issue of transitioning from being mere hearers or readers of scripture to being practical Christians.
He said, “Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice.” (Philippians 4:9). Paul had taught the Philippians a lot, not only through this comprehensive letter but also through the power of example while living in Philippi.
So Follow My Example
Now, he wanted the Philippians to implement the teachings in their lives. What benefit would the teachings have if the believers remained unchanged? If they continued concentrating their minds on ungodly content, the gospel would be of no effect to them (Read Philippians 4:8).
If Paul were alive today, he would have written the same message to the modern church. We have gradually lost our flavour as the salt of the earth because we have remained mere hearers of the word. The Bible contains practical instructions and wisdom on many aspects of life.
Put Into Practice Bible Teachings
If we put into practice what we read in the Bible, we would be more loving, forgiving, and benevolent than we are today. Our homes would be happier and more cohesive. People would flood churches. Society would have fewer crimes. Jails would have fewer inmates. Our environment would be cleaner and more habitable.
Take a moment to reflect on your life. Which Bible teachings have you failed to put into practice, because of which you are not living optimally? Which steps will you take today to stop being a mere hearer and reader of the word of God and become a doer?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me to put into practice the teachings in Your word.
