Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
John 13:17 (NIV)
Jesus identified two categories of people among His hearers (Matthew 21:23-32). Whichever group we belong to has temporal and eternal implications.
The first class is personified by a son who was told by his father, “Son, go and work today in the vineyard.” (v. 28). His answer? “I will not (v. 29).
The disappointed old man approached his other son with the same directive. This time, he received a positive response, “I will, sir.” (v. 30). The father must have been overjoyed.
The story does not end there. The rebellious son later, “… changed his mind and went.” He repented his sin and obeyed his father’s command.
Unfortunately, the second son did not go to work as he had promised (v. 30). According to Christ and those listening to Him, the second son, not the first, failed the father.
The teaching of the parable is that words, without appropriate actions, are useless. It is futile for us to profess love for Christ while disobeying Him and hurting our fellow human beings.
Christ says to us, “Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.” (John 13:17). How good would our world be if we matched our words with our actions? How many souls would be won to Christ through our example? Are you the first or the second son?
Pleasing God does not mean we will not, at times, disappoint Him. It means that whenever we realize we have hurt Him, we will repent and begin to obey his commandments.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me to realign my words with my actions.
Amen. This is a wake up call to all of us. Have a blessed day.
It sure is, Harriet. Have a restful night and don’t forget to come back here tomorrow for another inspiring devotional.
This shows how Christians have taken God for granted.
We should be doers and not only Sayers of the word.
Personally have heard people say, if Christianity is that of so and so, I would rather not go to Church.
Very encouraging. God help me to be the neither of the sons but be the Sayer and the doer.
Wow! You amaze me by the various ways you interpret scripture. Always edifying to read your comments, Pastor Dun.
Lord my mighty help me to do according to your desires.
Let my words match my actions in Jesus name.
Amen, Sister Petronilla. May God hear your prayers.
