Remember Me For Good

Daily Devotional – Tuesday, May 16, 2023
Remember me, my God, for good, according to all that I have done for this people.
Nehemiah 5:19 (NKJV)

When Nehemiah received information on the deplorable situation in Jerusalem and the situation of the remnants, he was dejected. After consulting God and seeking for permission and assistance from King Artaxerxes, Nehemiah embarked on the ambitious project of rebuilding the Jerusalem wall.

Restoring Spirituality

This selfless leader left the comfort of King Artaxerxes’s palace, where he was the king’s cupbearer. Despite being a governor with powers to exact tribute from his subjects, he used his personal resources to finance the project (Read Nehemiah Chapter 5).

Further, Nehemiah risked his life for the work of God. He also ensured the Jews returned tithes and offering to support the Levites and singers who worked in the temple. This helped entrench the worship of Jehovah among the Jews. (Read Nehemiah Chapter 13).

Think Upon Me

In the same chapter, Nehemiah ensured Jews and foreign traders who brought wares to Jerusalem observed the weekly Sabbath rest. He wanted Israel to return to the worship system God had designed for them.

Now, in his book, Nehemiah makes three similar statements worth pondering:

  1. Remember me, my God, for good, according to all that I have done for this people.” (Nehemiah 5:19).
  2. Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and do not wipe out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God, and for its services!” (Nehemiah 13:14).
  3. Remember me, O my God, for good!” (Nehemiah 13:31). This is the last verse of the book.

God Will Not Forget Our Labours

In these verses, we see a man who is does not shy from requesting God for favours. He knows he has served God with diligence. Nehemiah is not asking for fame but for blessings. This is not righteousness by works but a request for God to fulfill His promises for those who render service of His kingdom.

The God of Nehemiah promises “…to bless all the work of your hand.” (Deuteronomy 28:12). He also assures us that He “is not unjust to forget your work and labor of love which you have shown toward His name, in that you have ministered to the saints, and do minister.” (Hebrews 6:10).

Remember Me for Good

If you are doing God’s work and blessings His people, God will remember you. Otherwise,
what works or accomplishments would you cite as you seek God’s blessings? How often do you offer selfless service for God and His people? Can you confidently plead with God, like Nehemiah, “Remember me, O my God, for good?

Prayer
Remember me, my God, for good, according to all that I have done for your people. Help me to continue blessing others.
