Reveling in the Elixir of Life

Daily Devotional – Saturday, September 17, 2022
For with You is the fountain of life.
Psalms 36:9 (NKJV)

According to Dictionary.com, the phrase ‘elixir of life’ refers to “an alchemic preparation formerly believed to be capable of prolonging life.” It also denotes “a magical concoction capable of promoting long life.”

These definitions imply that man is obsessed with living forever or, at least, for a very long time. However, attempts to remain young and live forever have failed over the years. Some turn to cosmetics, plastic surgery and diet but old age and death eventually catch up with humans.

The Elixir is Lost

Because of eating the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden, Adam and his offspring are bound to age and die. In Genesis Chapter 3, God cursed the earth and man’s life became one of toil and sweat. If there was an elixir of life, it was lost in Eden.

Psalms 36, however, revives in us the hope of an elixir of life. This poem contrasts the wickedness of man and the goodness and perfection of God. While we cannot be young forever or escape the grave, there is hope for a good life now and immortality later.

Drinking from the River of God’s Pleasures

This is possible because of the attributes of God stated in this verse: “Your mercy, O LORD, is in the heavens. Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.” (Verse 5). “How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God!” (Verse 7).

The Psalmist observes further, “Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Your wings. They are abundantly satisfied with the fullness of Your house, and You give them drink from the river of Your pleasures.” (Verse 7-8). If we are faithful to God, He will make our temporal lives a pleasant experience.

With you is the Elixir of Life

In addition, David identifies the real elixir of life when he tells God, “For with You is the fountain of life. “ (Verse 9). The source of your life, literally, is God. More importantly, He is the elixir of life, from which we derive eternal life. Make sure you drink from this fountain today and forever by giving your life to Jesus.

Prayer
Thank You, God, because you are my elixir of life.
