The name of the LORD is a strong fortress; the godly run to him and are safe.
Proverbs 18:10 (NLT)
According to the Cambridge Dictionary, a fortress is “a large, strong building or group of buildings that can be defended from attack.” In ancient times, when a powerful enemy attacked, people would run to fortresses or tower for safety.
The Name of the LORD is a Strong Fortress
The modern equivalent of antique fortresses is a war bunker. Here, citizens are sheltered from bombs and can feel safe while war is raging on the earth’s surface. Any non-military individual outside the bunker during attacks deliberately risks injury and death.
King Solomon was conversant with fortresses, hence the statement, “The name of the LORD is a strong fortress; the godly run to him and are safe.” (Proverbs 18:10). He likened frightened people running to towers (or bunkers) to the people of God fleeing to Him in their moments of insecurity.
God is Merciful and Gracious, longsuffering…
Why is the Name of the Lord a strong tower to His people? Because God is “merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin..” (Exodus 34:6-7).
To this stronghold, sinners (including repeat offenders) can run and find forgiveness, grace and kindness. The sick who make haste to reach this citadel will receive healing. Those that are lonely, depressed and hopeless will find acceptance and indescribable love in the Name of the Lord.
Run to the Strong Fortress for Safety
The righteous man or woman seeking for employment can place their request at the door of this divine fortress and expect a favourable answer. This mighty tower performs miracles for parents with hungry children, and those that cannot send their young ones to school for lack of fees. Moreover, in the safety of God’s Name we find healing for marriages, families and friendships.
Which challenges are you facing today? Do you feel defeated, overwhelmed and hopeless? As long as you are alone and helpless, the devil can attack you. God pleads with you to abandon everything and run to the strong fortress for safety. That tower is His unchangeable character: merciful, loving, caring, good and faithful.

Dear Lord, because Your Name is a strong fortress, I will run to You for safety. Tale all my defeats and fears and give me Your peace.
