…let us lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.
Hebrews 12:1 (NKJV)
In ancient Greece, runners competed in marathons to be celebrated and crowned winners. Some chose to run completely naked because they believed clothes had extra weight that could slow them down, hence reducing their chances of winning.
Hebrews 12 uses marathon imagery to convey important lessons on the race to eternity. First, “we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses” (Verse 1). God and His angels, and Satan and his demons, watch with interest the choices we make every day.
Second, for that reason, “let us lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us” (Verse 1). In this spiritual race, we must run ‘naked’. This means getting rid of all the evil that traps us, preventing us from running and winning.
Third, we must focus on the prize. “looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith” (Verse 2). The ultimate prize for this spiritual race is a blissful eternity to be spent with God. Never forget what the race is all about.
Four, we have a role model who, “for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Verse 2). Jesus ran the same marathon and won. He understands our struggles.
God fills us with His Holy Spirit to guide us. He sends his holy angels to protect us. We must win this race.
Prayer
Father, help me get rid of all obstacles in the race to eternity.

Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint but rather be healed. Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no “root of bitterness” springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled
Amen, Joseph.
