Oh, sing to the LORD a new song! Sing to the LORD, all the earth.
Psalms 96:1 (NKJV)
David’s quest to bring the Ark of God to Jerusalem finally paid off. The unprecedented celebrations entailed burnt offerings and peace offerings to God. The king also blessed those who attended and gave “everyone a loaf of bread, a piece of meat, and a cake of raisins.” (1 Chronicles 16:3).
Israel Praise and Thanks God
David appointed Levites to minister before the ark, and to organize a music extravaganza. Asaph was the conductor of the choir that played stringed instruments, harps, cymbals, and trumpets. The people praised and worshipped God as they reveled in the presence of the ark in the city of David.
David, however, could not let the occasion end without composing a commemorative psalm of thanksgiving. Part of that song is in Psalms 96, where David exclaims, “Oh, sing to the LORD a new song! Sing to the LORD, all the earth.” (Verse 1). This is more than a call to praise God.
Celebrating Life’s Milestone
Biblical songs are products of events. For example, Miriam and Aaron composed a song to celebrate the exodus from Egypt. Similarly, David calls upon the Israelites to compose and sing a new song to the Lord to mark the entry of the ark into Jerusalem. Old songs are good, but they will not suffice here because this is a new experience.
Our relationship with God is not different. It has to be dynamic, filled with milestones through which the Lord has carried us. The more God blesses us, the more testimonies we will have of His goodness. Every battle we overcome calls for a new song, an occasion to thank and celebrate the God who gives us victory.
Sing to the Lord a New Song!
Let every morning create in you a heart of gratitude to God. As you end the day, reflect on the challenges and triumphs, and take a moment to compose a new song to God. Let your diary be filled with records of the small and great miracles of life. Whenever possible, share your experiences with another person to encourage him or her.
God loves to hear your songs because they express your appreciation for Him. Just as you are quick to present your petitions to him, create time to tell him ‘thank you’. Make every triumph in your life a brand new song. In addition to your old songs, compose new ones. Sing to the Lord a new song today!
