Some trust in chariots, and some in horses, but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.
Psalms 20:7 (NKJV)
In ancient battles, the most powerful and feared armies were those with many horses and chariots. For example, Pharaoh and his soldiers trusted in their military might and pursued the Israelites into the Red Sea.
In contrast, Moses was leading hundreds of thousands of unarmed men, women and children. What a mismatch of military might! If the Israelites were to fight back, they would have used sticks, stones and bare hands.
Some Trust in Chariots and Horses
David must have been reflecting on this event and similar ones when he sang about the certainty of God’s intervention on behalf of those who serve and obey Him, in Psalm 20. If you are afraid at any time, take time to read this psalm.
The crescendo of this reassuring song is verse 7, where David exclaims, “Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; But we will remember the name of the LORD our God.” How I wish all Christians would memorize this verse!
Trusting in Modern Chariots and Horses
Modern horses and chariots that people trust in include money, godfathers, politicians, education and so on. We believe that if we served these individuals and items, our lives will be happier and secure.
However, trusting in anyone or anything other than God is idol worship. In good or bad times, we must trust in the only Name in which there is salvation – Jesus Christ. As you face the challenges of this day, “May the name of the God of Jacob defend you.” (Psalms 20:1).
Prayer
Almighty Father, some trust in chariots, and some in horses, but I will remember the name of the LORD my God.
