Success is God Blessing the Work of Your Hands

Daily Devotional – Monday, April 12, 2021

Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and prosper for us the work of our hands— O prosper the work of our hands!

Psalm 90:17 (NRSV)

Grace was a hardworking student in high school. Her efforts were rewarded with admission to study medicine in a prestigious university.

Her first year grades were exemplary. Her second year grades, though, dropped significantly. The university directed her to repeat that year. She was devastated. After deep reflection, she attributed her dismal performance to her religious life.

You see, in her second year, she would spend more time on religious activities than on studies. Sometimes when her friends were studying or revising for semester examinations, she would be attending church meetings.

She believed that if she spent much time in church functions, God would make her pass examinations, even with little or no preparations.

Now she blamed her misery on God. She concluded that serving God was not rewarding. She stopped attending church. She devoted herself to books and became withdrawn and miserable.

If only she had read and understood Psalm 90:17? “Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and prosper for us the work of our hands— O prosper the work of our hands!

Success is as a result of God blessing “the work our hands.” Faith and worship have their place. So does work.

We cannot refuse or fail to work and expect God to prosper us. If we replace our duties and responsibilities with religious rituals and expect God to bless us, we go against the will of the God who instructed man to work, even before sin came into our world (Genesis 2:15). Father, please prosper the work of my hands.
