Teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom
Psalms 90:12 (NIV)
As I waited for the doctor to discharge me from the COVID-19 isolation facility, I knew my life had changed. After three weeks of seclusion and fighting for dear life, I was now ready to return to my daily routine, but as a changed person.
Coronavirus taught me to value life, family and friends. It made me appreciate the importance of the love and prayers of fellow believers. I realized that even the annoyances and inconveniences of my workplace made my life more colourful.
Teach Us to Number Our Days
More importantly, l appreciated the brevity of life. I knew people who had died of the dreaded disease. I remembered crying desperately to God to heal and save me. It was only by His grace that I was now returning to my family, friends and work.
The realization that a day would come when I would depart the face of the earth hit me hard. I remembered the prayer of Moses, “Teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” (Psalms 90:12).
That We May Gain a Heart of Wisdom
I thank God because He gave me wisdom during my hospitalization. After I was discharged, I launched a website (www.dailyfamilydevotions.com). As I write a devotional every day, God reminds me to make the best of my remaining days on earth.
Gaining a heart of wisdom has many more meanings for me. It implies prudent time management. It means having priorities and focusing on a few important tasks at a time. It demands that I create time for my personal development and spiritual nurture.
Listen to the Voice of God
When we learn to number our days, we will seek for reconciliation with estranged family members, neighbors and workmates. We will have meaningful, loving and productive relationships with those around us.
