Tell It to Jesus

Daily Devotional – Tuesday, January 9, 2023
And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it; and Hezekiah went up to the house of the LORD and spread it before the LORD
2 Kings 19:14 (NKJV)

King Sennacherib of Assyria was not giving Hezekiah and the Jews any peace. Assyria was the then-superpower nation. It continued conquering nations with ease, but Judah refused to surrender. This galled the pagan king.

He Spread the Letter before God

Consequently, Sennacherib sent a letter to King Hezekiah in which the arrogant Assyrian cast aspersion on Jehovah and his ability to protect His people. The king listed the nations he had conquered and their respective kings, and he asked why these nations’ gods had not saved them from destruction.

And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it; and Hezekiah went up to the house of the LORD and spread it before the LORD.” (2 Kings 19:14–15). The king did not bother to reply to the bully, Sennacherib. Instead, he turned to the only power that could save his nation: God.

Hezekiah Told God His Problems

Like Hezekiah, we will receive overt and covert threats from ungodly people because they hate God’s favors in our lives. They will wonder how we thrive in the midst of chaos. They will hate us for exemplifying godliness and not joining them in rebellion against God. Our fidelity to God will condemn their sinfulness, hence the desire to harm us.

Thank God that Hezekiah’s story had a good ending. When he placed the threatening letter before God, the Lord eventually destroyed Sennacherib and his armies. Whenever we turn our troubles to God, He hears and acts. Instead of engaging in physical and verbal wars with those who seek to harm us, we should report their threats to God and let Him act.

Tell it to Jesus.

To quote the lyrics of a famous hymn:
Do you fear the gath’ring clouds of sorrow?
Tell it to Jesus. Tell it to Jesus. Are you anxious about what shall be tomorrow?
Tell it to Jesus alone
.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, when the enemy threatens to overwhelm me, I will tell You my troubles because I know You will fight for me.
