The Connection Between Speech and Wisdom

Daily Devotional – Tuesday, December 10, 2024
He who has knowledge spares his words, and a man of understanding is of a calm spirit.
Proverbs 17:27 (NKJV)

Our guiding text serves as a potent reminder of the significance of our speech and listening in a society where ideas are openly exchanged and words are numerous. According to this verse, people with wisdom keep a composed and steady demeanour, while those with knowledge are cautious with their remarks.

The Wise Reins His Language

Words are more than mere tools of communication; they may be used to create or destroy, to uplift or demoralize, to mend or injure. Knowledgeable people are aware of the consequences of their statements. They speak intentionally rather than impulsively because they are aware of the influence their words might have on other people.

Furthermore, the understanding person is even-tempered, which refers to maintaining composure under pressure. An understanding person does not allow emotions to dictate their responses in a society where rage and irritation can flare up rapidly.

The Connection Between Speech and Wisdom

Do we speak quickly and frequently without considering the consequences of what we say? Or do we talk carefully, wisely, and thoughtfully? Do we become angry quickly, or do we maintain our composure and trust God to give us the ability to stay composed under pressure? Those who profess to follow Christ should not act or speak recklessly or impulsively like unbelievers.

Today, let us resolve to communicate in a way that uplifts rather than denigrates others by reflecting knowledge and wisdom. May we respond to provocation with compassion and with patience and understanding. Let us also, by the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit restrain our speech and maintain composure under all circumstances.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, grant us the ability to talk intelligently, tactfully, and empathetically.
