The Danger of Being Almost a Christian

Daily Devotional – Thursday, March 31, 2022

So, they come to you as people do, they sit before you as My people, and they hear your words, but they do not do them...

Ezekiel 33:31 (NKJV)

An anonymous person once said that going to church does not make one a Christian just as entering a car garage does not make one a car. From a casual look, there was no difference between the five wise and five foolish virgins.

They were all virgins who professed the pure faith practiced by Jesus and the apostles. All of them carried lamps, meaning they read and believed the word of God (See Psalm 119:105). Each lamp had oil in it. The Holy Spirit was active in the life of each virgins.

They Hear Your Words but They Do Not Do Them

Then came the defining moment. The bridegroom delayed. All the virgins slept. Their love grew cold. However, when the bridegroom finally came, only those who had yielded to the transforming power of the Holy Spirit entered the banqueting hall.

The foolish virgin were exposed. Ezekiel describes them as follows: “So they come to you as people do, they sit before you as My people, and they hear your words, but they do not do them; for with their mouth they show much love, but their hearts pursue their own gain.”(Ezekiel 33:31).

Almost a Christian but Not a Christian

Getting saved and serving in the church is not enough. Reading the Bible, praying and preaching are not sufficient by themselves. We must be doers, not just hearers, of God’s word.

Christians must have both the form and power of godliness. We must allow the Holy Spirit to transform our character. Instead of engaging in mere religious formalities, we should allow the Holy Spirit to transform our characters and restore the image of God in us.

Almost a Christian means you are not a Christian. Are you allowing the Holy Spirit full access and control in your life?

Prayer

Holy Spirit, continue transforming me. I want to be a doer and not just a hearer of Your word.
