The Definition of True Heroism

Daily Devotional – Friday, February 6, 2026
It is preferable to be a patient person rather than a warrior, and to have self-control over conquering a city.
Proverbs 16:32 (NIV)

Our fascination with heroes is a remnant of human history. We admired those who led their people into battle against intruders or assisted in the conquest of rivals. If they conquered villages, towns, and cities, they assured themselves a permanent place in history.

Are You in Control?

King Solomon recognised the exalted status of heroes in society (such as his father, David), but he emphasised a different type of protagonist. The contrast in the key text is striking. ‘Warrior’ and ‘patient’ are not words that appear together often. We don’t connect superheroes with self-control. Why does Solomon emphasise these characteristics over human courage?

The wise man realises that the war within the human mind is more ferocious than the battle among humans. Real heroes are defined by their refusal to react in kind when provoked and their ability to maintain control when circumstances call for an emotional response.

The Definition of True Heroism

Conquering oneself and harmful habits developed over time takes more effort and discipline than fighting an army. Paul, a powerful spiritual warrior, compares himself to an athlete who has to discipline his body for him to attain the prize. He even observes that it would be unfair to himself to preach to others only for him to end up in hell (1 Corinthians 9:27).

Are you always in control of your ideas and emotions? Can you maintain your composure when provoked? How do you respond to a crisis? How do you deal with victory, failure, and flattery? Your reply qualifies you as a true hero or not.

Prayer
Holy Spirit, grant me patience and self-control so that I may become a true Christian hero.
