And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses.
Mark 11:25 (NKJV)
Jesus highlights the close relationship between prayer and forgiveness in today’s key text. We need to have empty hearts when we come to God in prayer, free from all anger and animosity. It serves as a reminder that our relationships with people have a direct effect on how we relate to God.
The Burden of Resentment
It can often seem like a huge undertaking to forgive. We could be prone to hurt or rage, holding onto the suffering that other people have inflicted upon us. Jesus, though, asks us to let go. The goal of forgiveness is to free ourselves from the bonds of resentment that hold us back, not to justify wrongdoing or minimize suffering.
Think about the liberation that results from forgiving. Forgiveness allows us to be more receptive to God’s grace. We let His love fill our hearts, turning our grief into healing and our rage into compassion.
The Freedom of Forgiving and Letting Go
Think for a moment about any unresolved emotions you could be carrying around. Do you owe somebody forgiveness? Remind yourself of the freedom that comes from letting go as you ask the Holy Spirit to lead you through this process.
Reach out to someone you have had disagreements with, whether it be by phone, physical meeting, or prayer. Make a move in the direction of reconciliation, no matter how tiny. Recall that forgiveness is a journey on which you get closer to God’s heart with each step you take.
Prayer
Merciful Father, grant me the courage to let go of my grudges and make amends with people I disagree with.
