The Good Side of Suffering

It is good for me that I have been afflicted, that I may learn Your statutes.
Psalms 119:71 (NKJV)

Suffering, or affliction, is not usually regarded as a good thing. A lot of the time, suffering and adversity can seem pointless. In contrast, the psalmist knew that God was at work even when things were tough.

I was Afflicted

The psalmist’s anguish was not pointless; rather, it was a necessary component of God’s process of refinement, which enabled him to gain a deeper comprehension of God’s laws and methods.

In God’s hands, suffering can be a tool that helps us develop character and faith. We can learn lessons and purify our hearts via hardships and challenges that are not possible during peaceful times. Our worst moments are our growth moments.

Our sufferings bring us nearer to God rather than drive us away from Him. Through his distress, the psalmist gained a more profound and personal understanding of God’s laws. Particularly during trying times, God’s Word becomes our strength, consolation, and compass.

The Good Side of Suffering

When faced with difficulties, we have two options: we may rely on God’s Word or let doubt and resentment consume us. Like the psalmist, let us learn to accept God’s promises of consolation and strength, particularly during times of hardship.

Instead of fleeing from God in times of adversity, turn to His Word. Ask Him to your challenges to strengthen your faith and develop your character rather than to alleviate your sorrow. Have faith that He has a bigger plan for the challenging time.

Prayer
Almighty Father, the pain I go through is sometimes overwhelming, but I have faith that You will use it to grow my faith, teach me, and improve me.
