The ‘Good, the Bad and the Ugly’ of Scripture

Daily Devotional – Wednesday, July 14, 2021

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness

2 Timothy 3:16 (NKJV)

Someone tells you, “Today’s sermon is the best I have listened to in a while.” What kind of sermon would you conclude it was? A sermon on loving your neighbor or one condemning sin among Christians?

The Bible was written to encourage us (see Romans 15:4). It is, therefore, okay to love the motivational type of sermon. However, be ready to listen keenly, also, when scripture becomes a double-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12).

In 2 Timothy 3:16, we read, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness…” I call this passage ‘the good, the bad and the ugly” of scripture.

Without focused Bible Study, you cannot understand Christian doctrines. Appreciate the kind of sermons that sound like a classroom lesson.

Moreover, there are times we need strong rebukes to bring us back to our senses. So, value devotionals that will strongly condemn cherished sin.

In addition, the word of God shows you the way back to God. So, appreciate Biblical presentations that demand character transformation, not mere profession.

Finally, some devotionals will require you to spend time in Bible study, prayer, fellowship and witnessing. This is the path of righteousness.

The reason for these functions of scripture?  “…that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:17).

To grow into a mature Christian, you need Biblical reproof, correction, instruction and encouragement.

The Bible may not agree with you always but you must agree with it always.

Father, I accept all the functions of your word, not just those I find acceptable.

Gospel of prosperity has corrupted minds of many Christians, if you preach a message of rebuking and correcting you are assured of small number of congregation following Sundays.but according to me we should agree with bible always to grow wholistically.
