The Guaranteed Path to Greatness

Therefore, be careful to observe them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples who will hear all these statutes, and say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.’

According to Cambridge Dictionary, greatness means, “importance and fame, power or success.” Rarely will you find a person who does not desire greatness, at least in the context of this definition. Nevertheless, not many people become prominent. What then, is the guaranteed path to greatness?

Defining Prominence

Society considers rich people great. They appear to have everything they need – money, fame and happiness. Wealthy people have no cares in the world because money solves all their problems, or so we think.

Artistes and athletes are also great people. Every time they perform or win, media splashes their images everywhere. We marvel at how superhuman these people are. To cap it all, they earn lots of money and live lavishly. We celebrate them because they exemplify what most of us aspire to be.

The Road to Fame and Success

How about greatness among nations? The country with the largest and most sophisticated military is the greatest. Such a nation also happens to be wealthy and advanced in technology. Surveys describe its citizens as the happiest on earth and people want to immigrate into it.

Now, what does the Bible teach about greatness? Moses has the answer in his address to the Israelites, “Therefore, be careful to observe them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples who will hear all these statutes, and say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.’” (Deuteronomy 4:6).

Attaining Real Greatness

If the children of Jacob wanted to be great, they needed to obey and live by the laws of God. These statutes would inculcate in them wisdom and understanding that would make foreign nations marvel. In essence, the source of wisdom is reading, meditating on and obeying the word of God and the teachings therein.

Great individuals, societies, churches and nations are those that obey God’s laws, both moral and physical. Instead of searching for greatness in money, riches, education, fame and power, become a student of divine principles. Incorporate them in your work, studies and daily life and greatness will be yours.

The Guaranteed Path to Greatness

When we follow this guaranteed path to greatness, others will marvel “Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.” The word of God contains knowledge, understanding and wisdom that propels its consumers to greatness. Moreover, God often adds wealth and success to those who accept godly wisdom, as He deems fit.

Father, I want to become great, the divine way. Inculcate in me a desire to study and live by Your laws.
