But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly.
Luke 21:34 (NKJV)
In Luke 21:3–36, Jesus presented the signs of the end times and those of the impeding destruction of Jerusalem by Roman soldiers. He talked about signs in nature, society, and other aspects of life.
Out of love, the Lord taught His hearers how to prepare for the trouble ahead. He said, “But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that day come on you unexpectedly.” Luke 21:34.
One would hardly be surprised that Christ warned against partying and drunkenness. Who does not know that God detests these practices? The mention of ‘the cares of this life’, however, raises eyebrows.
How many of us are guilty of worrying excessively and unnecessarily about the cares of this life? The evil one is crafty. He sets a trap called ‘busyness’ for Christians. As long as Satan keeps us preoccupied with the anxieties of life, we will neglect our spiritual well-being.
It is interesting that Jesus mentions drunkenness and preoccupation with life’s cares in the same sentence. It means that when we prioritize our daily work and income-generating activities above God, we are just as guilty of sin as those who indulge in alcoholism and drug abuse.
Therefore, before you condemn those you consider to be defying God by sinning, remember that you are just like them if you are so busy that God takes a back seat in your life.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me not to allow busyness to crowd you out of my life.
What is your understanding of the ‘cares of this life’ and what it means for your spiritual life? Please let us know through your comments.
Amen..May God teach us His Will in our lives,so that we may live to please Him.🙏🙏
This is my prayer, too, Chairman. Be blessed.
Thank you for the devotion.
Ours is a jealous God! He may not allow what competes with His love to Him thrive. May His mercies be upon us as we do the delicate balancing of not being lazy and also not neglecting our service to Him.
Amen. I always look forward to your comments, Peterson. God bless you.
