The Lion that Roams the Street Hunting for Sluggards

Daily Devotional – Monday, October 4, 2021

The lazy person claims, “There’s a lion out there! If I go outside, I might be killed!”

Proverbs 22:13 (NLT)

I am not sure when I outgrew the fear of an ogre that lived in the forest along the river. Our parents only needed to mention this bogeyman and we would obey any instructions without question.

We believed that if we went to the river at night, the ogre would devour us. It became the perfect excuse for not venturing out at night.

According to Solomon, the lazy person creates a bogeyman to avoid working. “The lazy person claims, “There’s a lion out there! If I go outside, I might be killed!”(Proverbs 22:13). This verse is full of absurdity.

You would be very lucky (or maybe unlucky) to come across a lion in the street. Lions live in the wild. It is the height of fantasy to imagine that a lion would be waiting to pounce on a person in the streets.

People who avoid work create fantasies and excuses even where none exists.  Solomon further observes, “He who observes the wind will not sow...” (Ecclesiastes 11:4, NKJV).

When broadcasting seed, the wind can scatter the seed in a different direction thus spoiling the exercise. That could be the perfect excuse for not planting. However, with a little creativity, one can use the same wind to scatter the wind in just the right direction.

Fantasies and excuses are easy to create. However, “Those who work their land will have abundant food but those who chase fantasies have no sense.” (Proverbs 12:11, NIV). The only lion on the street for a sluggard is lack.

Heavenly Father, help me avoid excuses and find fulfilment in my work today.
