The Might Warrior Who Saves

Daily Devotional – Monday, February 13, 2023
The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you. In his love, he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.
Zephaniah 3:17 (NIV)

Apart from being the Father of Faith, Abraham was a mighty warrior. This sojourner lived among hostile nations and had a wayward nephew, Lot, who often found himself in trouble. Abraham’s exploits while saving Lot remind us of an even more powerful Warrior.

Warring Nations

Lot was a man prone to unwise decisions, one of which was to dwell in the fertile valleys of Sodom and Gomorrah. These cities were renowned as capitals of immorality and sexual perversions. In addition, they formed alliances with some of the neighbours to ward off enemy nations.

In Genesis Chapter 14, we come across one such incident. Sodom and Gomorrah are in an alliance of five nations. They attack a rival coalition of four nations. The five-nation army suffers heavy losses. Lot, his family and their possessions are taken away as spoils of war.

The Rejoicing Powerful Hero

Meanwhile, word reaches Abraham (then called Abram). The man of war marshals his militia of 318 highly trained men to rescue his wayward nephew. After a night of fighting, Abraham rescues Lot and the other captives. He also recovers Lot’s stolen possessions.

Who cannot imagine the jubilation as the valiant hero (Abraham) returns home with Lot and other spoils of war? The old man is delighted that he has rescued Lot. He has no time to rebuke his nephew for making wrong decisions. Abraham rejoices and sings with joy. Lot and his family join in the celebrations.

A Victorious Fighter

A similar scenario was in Prophet Zephaniah’s mind when he described the restoration of Zion / Jerusalem’s remnant after years of pain. He prophesied:
On that day they will say to Jerusalem, “Do not fear, Zion. Do not let your hands hang limp. The LORD your God is with you; the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you. In his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.”” (Zephaniah 3:16-17).

The Mighty Warrior Who Saves

Like Lot, we wander from God on many occasions but our Might One does not get tired of fighting Satan to get us back. He is ever-present to save His children. Instead of condemning us, God rejoices over us with singing. When a sinner turns to God, heaven erupts in jubilation.

Why fear when God the Mighty Warrior is on your side? Is there any reason for tarrying in sin when Jesus has fought the battle and won it for you? Will you be the reason heaven breaks into rejoicing and singing today? Surrender your life to God now and ask for His forgiveness.

Prayer
My Mighty Warrior, I submit to Your Lordship. My I be the reasons for heaven’s jubilation and singing today.
