So, the Lord said, “If you have faith as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be pulled up by the roots and be planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.
Luke 17:6 (NKJV)
A teacher instructed a boy to plant a small seed for a school project. The child diligently watered the seed every day, believing the teacher’s promise that it would grow into a big plant. Weeks stretched into a month, and finally, a delicate green shoot emerged from the earth. Over the years, it matured into a strong, thriving tree.
The Difference Between Size and Source
Jesus’ response to his followers’ request for more faith helps us understand the essence of faith. He says faith is enough, not due to its amount, but its object. When faith is genuine and based on God’s power, rather than human abilities, it can accomplish things that seem impossible.
The metaphor of moving a mulberry tree to the ocean is a deliberate exaggeration, highlighting the supremacy of divine power over human ability. Jesus’s main goal was to encourage faith. A small, but real, belief system creates a connection between believers and God. Answered prayers, some of which are extraordinary, demonstrate this connection.
The Power Hidden in Small Beginnings
Faith expresses itself through simple, consistent trust, like the boy’s persistence in watering the seed. Nevertheless, the seed’s growth didn’t depend on the boy’s abilities but on the seed’s inherent potential. Similarly, faith isn’t about how strong our feelings are. Instead, it’s about trusting God enough to follow His guidance every day.
Instead of waiting for God to move mightily, start with the little faith you have. Trust God in the little things, follow His guidance, and stay the course, even when you can’t see the outcome. God is working quietly, unseen, and in His own time, He will bring about what only He can do, thanks to your steadfast reliance on Him.
Prayer
Almighty God, give me the strength to believe in You, even when my faith feels small, and to put that belief into action every day.
