The Quality That Opened Every Door

Then this Daniel distinguished himself above the governors and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him, and the king gave thought to setting him over the whole realm.

King Darius took over a large empire and put trusted officials in charge of governing it. Daniel was one of only three administrators who assisted the king at the top level. The king saw that one man stood forth and watched the men under his command. Daniel was accounted wise, honest and dependable. It was no surprise that Darius began considering putting him in charge of the entire kingdom. What made Daniel different was that “an excellent spirit was in him”.

What Made Daniel Stand Out?

Daniel did not rise to the top by knowing how to impress people. His life was shaped by something much deeper. He approached every responsibility in the light of an excellent spirit. He served God whether anyone else saw it or not. He was direct when others would compromise. He was dependable when others became careless. He served faithfully even under rulers who did not share his faith. Long before he earned the king’s trust, he had learned to walk faithfully with God.

Most of us have prayed for God to open new doors. We hope for greater opportunities, more responsibility, or a chance to make a bigger difference. There is nothing wrong with those prayers. Daniel’s story reminds us, however, that God is often more concerned with preparing our character than changing our position. We naturally focus on where we want to be. God focuses on who we are becoming. An excellent spirit is formed one choice at a time through integrity, diligence, humility, and faithfulness in the ordinary moments of life.

The Quality That Opened Every Door

That challenge reaches every one of us. A student can develop an excellent spirit in the classroom. A parent can demonstrate this in the daily work of raising children. A church member can serve faithfully without needing recognition. A business owner can choose integrity when cutting corners would be easier. We do not pursue excellence to earn applause. We pursue it because it reflects the character of the God we represent. People may or may not notice, but the Lord always does.

Take a moment to honestly examine your life. Would the people who know you best say you have an excellent spirit? The opportunities you are praying for may come in God’s perfect time. In the meantime, you can choose to honour Him in the responsibilities that are already in front of you. That is where an excellent spirit is formed. The same God who shaped Daniel’s life is still shaping His people today, and a life marked by godly excellence will never go unnoticed.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, develop an excellent spirit within me that reflects Your character in every area of my life. Help me to pursue faithfulness instead of recognition and to honour You in both the small and the significant responsibilities. You have entrusted me.
