How Apostasy Takes Root Among Christians

Daily Devotional – Thursday, March 3, 2022

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.

2 Timothy 4:3-4 (NKJV)

Have you ever listened to a preacher and felt as if he or she was targeting you with the message? Perhaps you know people who stopped attending some churches because of such feelings.

Some offended churchgoers migrate to other churches where they are not condemned for their ungodly lifestyles. This can lead to a nomadism in search of ‘peace’ from God’s word, which is “sharper than any two-edged sword.” (Hebrews 4:12).

They Will Not Endure Sound Doctrine

The Apostle Paul, in his second letter to Timothy:

“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.” (2 Timothy 4:3-4).

Notice that professed believers will rebel against sound doctrine because it condemns their lifestyles. They will then hire their own preachers to deliver a sin-friendly message, ostensibly from God. In essence, they will be reject God and the truth to avoid conversion and transformation.

Scripture is Profitable for Doctrine, for Reproof, for Correction

It is a fact that the word of God will never change to fit our preferences, especially when our desires contravene God’s will. Rather, human beings must change to align with the demands of God’s word.

It is the nature of scripture to point out sin in our lives and demand for reforms. As Paul emphasizes:

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

Rejecting Correction Entrenches Apostasy

When the demands of God’s perfect law make you uncomfortable, do you reject correction or accepts God’s reproof and reform?

Lord Jesus, do not allow apostasy to take root in my heart. Teach me to obey Your word without question.

Cheap religion is attracting millions and millions of people. The book of revelations says that those who followed the beast were like the sands of the sea and their noise was like that sounds of the sea waters.
