And He opened their understanding that they might comprehend the Scriptures.
Luke 24:45 (NKJV)
One of the most iconic phrases in the Bible is, “Man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the LORD.” (Deuteronomy 8:3). So important was this statement that Jesus repeated it while rebutting Satan’s temptations in Matthew 4:4.
A Profitable Experience with Scripture
Indeed, the word of God is to the soul what food is to the body. Just as a man will die after abstaining from food for a long time, so is a believer at risk of spiritual demise for neglecting spiritual food. It is inconceivable to have a vibrant and evangelizing Christian who does not read the Bible regularly.
That said, how we approach scripture determines how much benefit we derive from reading it. Jesus revealed the secret of effective Bible study when He appeared to His despondent disciples after He had resurrected. Apparently, the disciples had not comprehended Christ’s earlier teachings and their prophetic significance.
He Opened Up Their Understanding
According to Luke, “And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.” (Luke 24:45). God, the Holy Spirit, authored the Bible through different writers. Consequently, unless God opens our understanding, we cannot appreciate the Word of God. The human mind, by itself, is incapable of grasping the divine truths in scripture.
In essence, before you open the Bible, ask God to open your mental faculties so that you may understand heavenly concepts. Who else can explain the rationale, content, interpretation, and application of the scripture better than its author? Instead of relying on human interpretations that are often misleading, why not submit to the guidance of God?
The Secret to Fruitful Bible Study
The secret to fruitful Bible study is to allow Jesus to open your mind to comprehend divine mysteries. Pray that the Holy Spirit will enlighten your mind whenever you open the Bible to read. Ask God to help you set aside your biases and prejudices when studying His word so that He opens His truth to you.
Prayer
Open your understanding so that I might comprehend the scriptures.
