The Special Gift of Prayer

Daily Devotional – Saturday, November 4, 2023
…and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:7 (NKJV)

Like the disciples of Jesus, I need more classes in the Jesus School of Prayer (read Luke 11:1). This is because I infrequently catch myself presenting a dry shopping list to God. Sometimes I cannot tell when I am complaining to God or when I am telling Him my needs. One thing I know, though, is that I enjoy the special gift of prayer.

The Peace that Surpasses All Understanding

To understand what this unique gift is, here is one of the Bible’s most profound passages on prayer:
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7).

According to these verses, because we serve the Owner of the universe and He is our Father, we need not worry about the challenges of life. It is our privilege to come before God with our petitions, even if they read like shopping lists. In the process, we must learn to thank God even before He answers our petitions because we know He is trustworthy.

The Special Gift of Prayer

Now, here is the unique product of supplication. Whether He answers our prayers immediately or not, whether He even grants our supplications in the first place, God grants us His peace, which surpasses all understanding. This peace guards our hearts and minds, making us content irrespective of the outcome of our petitions.

Essentially, you can enjoy what you cannot even understand. You can rise up from your knees, your problems still intact, but experience the peace and joy of knowing God is able and in control. This is a privilege reserved for those who commune with God with sincerity. If you are not enjoying the special gift of prayer, you are missing out on a great blessing.

Prayer
Dear God, fill me with the peace that surpasses understanding, the special gift of every genuine prayer.

Amen! In a world full of Chaos and turmoil, this peace that surpasses understanding is what we need.
Peace, Christ gives not as the world gives. John 14:27.
With a good prayerlife we discover peace of mind, trusting in the assurance that through our prayers we are liberated from all our cares, anxieties and troubles.
