The True Source of Self-Esteem

I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Psalms 139:14 (NKJV)

It’s easy to slip into the trap of determining our value by transitory standards in a world where we are constantly invited to estimate our worth based on external criteria, such as our looks, accomplishments, or social standing. However, as Christ-followers, we have a much deeper and more permanent foundation for our self-esteem.

Fearfully and Wonderfully Made

Psalm 139:14 reminds us that we are “fearfully and wonderfully made.” Because the Divine Artist painstakingly and meticulously created each of us, we are all works of art. Our worth is independent of what other people think of us or even of how we occasionally feel about ourselves.

Nevertheless, a lot of us battle emotions of inadequacy, insecurity, and self-doubt in spite of this basic reality. We struggle with our shortcomings, make comparisons to other people, or contemplate on our errors from the past. On the other hand, we can truly break free from the bonds of low self-esteem when we accept who we are as loving children of God, made in His likeness and redeemed by His Son.

The True Source of Self-Esteem

Let us keep our focus on the permanent truth of God’s Word rather than the constantly shifting standards of this world as we go through life. Let us develop an attitude of thankfulness for the special abilities, attributes, and gifts He has bestowed upon us. Further, let us walk with assurance, knowing that we are valuable in His eyes and that we are meant to boldly and joyfully fulfill our mission. May we cling to God, the true source of self-esteem.
