The Two Faces of God

Notice how God is both kind and severe. He is severe toward those who disobeyed but kind to you if you continue to trust in his kindness. But if you stop trusting, you also will be cut off.

We love talking about how kind, loving, and merciful God is, and it is all true. He is incredibly patient and compassionate. However, our key text reminds us not to forget another important face of God: He is also just, holy, and serious about sin.

Kind and Severe

Paul is writing to people who were starting to feel too confident, even a little entitled. He is telling them, “Stay humble. Stay connected. Stay faithful.” It is possible to drift into thinking that God’s grace means we can do whatever we want, and He will just smile and wave it off.

God’s love is strong enough to forgive anything but also deep enough to call us to something better. God does not want to scare us, but He does want us to take our walk with Him seriously. His kindness should lead us to gratitude and obedience, not laziness or pride.

The Two Faces of God

Are you staying close to God’s heart, or just coasting on His grace? Have you lost your sense of reverence for how holy He is? God’s kindness is a beautiful gift, and His holiness is a powerful guide. Embrace both His kindness and severity, and let them shape how you live every day.

Prayer
Almighty God, thank You for being kind to me, even though I don’t deserve it. Help me never to take Your grace lightly. Remind me that Your kindness is not a pass but a call to walk closely with You.
