The Unfathomable Blessings of Doing the Unthinkable

Daily Devotional – Sunday, October 17, 2022
When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”
Luke 5:4 (NKJV)

Simon Peter and his colleagues, seasoned fisherman, were exhausted and frustrated. They had caught no fish the whole night. As they washed their nets, they hoped the next night would be different.

On the shore of the sea, another event was unfolding. The Rabbi from Nazareth requested to use Peter’s boat as a floating pulpit to address a multitude. Peter obliged.

Doing the Inconceivable

When Christ finished preaching, He expressed His gratitude by telling Peter, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” (Luke 5:4). It was unthinkable for Peter, an experienced fisherman, to lower his nets during the day.

He told Jesus as much, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.” (Luke 5:5). In Peter’s statement, we find a mix of rationalism and faith. All circumstances are against fishing at this time. However, because I recognize You as a divine Teacher, I will do the unconceivable You have instructed.

Blessed for Trusting

You know what followed. Peter caught so much fish that his nets began to break. The haul was so heavy that it caused two boats to start sinking! Where were these fish the previous night? Peter must have wondered.

Two lessons emerge from this incident. First, like Peter, when we surrender our resources and means to Jesus, He will multiply them and bless us beyond our imagination. God is, “is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think.” (Ephesians 3:20).

The Unfathomable Blessings of Doing the Unthinkable

Second, faith does not necessarily negate reality. Faith acknowledges facts but is not limited by realism. Fishing happens at night but God can give us fish during the day because all nature obeys Him.

Have you reached a point of desperation in your life? Is sin weighing you down? Turn to Jesus today. Offer your life and all its aspects to Him. Believe that He can transform your life in a moment. No circumstance is beyond Him.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, I submit my life and circumstances to You today. I will do the unthinkable if You ask me to. I know You can do exceedingly abundantly that all I ask or think.
