Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.
Matthew 7:12 (NKJV)
Have you noticed that when a stranger smiles at you, you are likely to smile back, even when you do not know the reason for the stranger’s smile? Similarly, if you walk into a room where people are gloomy, you cannot dare crack a joke!
Whatever You Want Men to do to You
If a person helped you in the past, you are likely to reciprocate when your situation improves. If the person who helped you is comfortable, you will extend your generosity to another needy person.
Moreover, is someone attacks you verbally or physically, the natural human tendency and reaction is to hit back. Tit for tat is a fair game, or so they say. Only those controlled by God can walk away from provocation.
Jesus taught His disciples the Golden Rule, a principle that explains the scenarios above. He said, “Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” (Matthew 7:12).
Life is an Echo
In essence, we determine how people treat us. Life is an echo. We get back what we give out. This rule is repeated in Luke 6:38, “Give and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”
Wise King Solomon’s version reads, “The generous soul will be made rich, and he who waters will also be watered himself.” (Proverbs 11:25). Similarly, “A man who has friends must himself be friendly.” (Proverbs 18:24).
Today, determine to treat everyone you meet the way you would want them to treat you. Be kind, respectful and loving and chances are, those around you will reciprocate. Remember, life is an echo. You get back what you give out.
Prayer
Almighty Father, remind me to always practice the Golden Rule.
