But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart.
Luke 2:19 (NKJV)
One of the little-known lessons from the life of Mary, the mother of Jesus, is the need to think deeply about one’s life. The average person often treats every life occurrence casually. There is a tendency not to scratch below the surface to reflect and synthesize events.
She Dwelt on the Issues in Her Mind
Let’s ponder Mary’s experience first. Angel Gabriel had delivered to her the greatest news any human being could receive. She was the favorite to give birth to the Messiah. Jesus would later arrive in the world in the most unexpected of fashions: a helpless baby placed in a manger.
Mary, a simple village girl, must have been overwhelmed by these happenings. The involvement of Joseph, Elizabeth, Zechariah, the Magi, and the shepherds deepened the mystery around Mary.
She Pondered Them in Her Heart
It is no wonder then that she “kept all these things and pondered them in her heart.” (Luke 2:19). The implication of the verb ‘ponder’ in this context is that Mary carefully thought about all the happenings, compared and contrasted them, and sewed them together, all in an attempt to make sense of the events.
Mary did not share her concerns and the musings of her heart with others. She retreated into her mind and analyzed her life in light of God’s gracious dealings in her. These were not normal happenings. What was God telling her? How would these events alter her life? What were the long-term implications of the current happenings?
Think Deeply About Your Life
Like Mary, every Christian should have quiet, personal moments to reflect on his or her life. You need to set aside time to analyze the happenings and patterns of events in your life. Doing so may not give you all the answers, but it will help you appreciate God’s presence and guidance in your life. Today, think deeply about your life and let God speak to you in quietness.
Prayer
Dear God, teach me to ponder my life so that I may gain wisdom and appreciate your dealings with me.
