I recently had an interesting exchange with an atheist on Quora.com (you can read it by clicking here). He was not happy that I had asked, “What should Christians do when anxious, fearful, or worried?”
While other people gave their answers, this individual persisted in discouraging faith in God. He claimed atheism was not a system of belief. I countered that atheism was a belief in the non-existence of God.
In the course of our exchange, my friend listed one value of atheism as, “Do unto others what you would have them do unto you.” Is this not the Golden Rule of Matthew 7:12? I asked myself.
It says, “Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” That is why the two of us could remain respectful despite not sharing a belief in God.
Someone once said, “Every human wears a big, bold label: ‘Treat me well; I am important.’” Both my friend and I wanted to be respected and understood, despite the obvious differences.
If we treated people as important and worthy, the earth would be more habitable. Addressing others with decorum would vastly improve our relationships.
If you were sick, grieving, starving, sad, stressed, impoverished, or imprisoned, how would you want others to treat you? Do exactly that to people in similar situations, despite any differences between you and them.
Remember to see this bold label in everyone you meet today: “Treat me well. I am important.”
Father, help me to practice the Golden Rule.
