Trusting Our Unchangeable God in Unpredictable Circumstances

Daily Devotional – Sunday, August 28, 2022
For I am the LORD, I do not change. Therefore, you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob.
Malachi 3:6 (NKJV)

lobal warming has resulted in unpredictable climate and weather patterns. These days we receive scanty rains during seasons when we used to have hot weather and vice versa. Prolonged drought is often followed by flooding.

The weatherman in my area must be going through a rough patch. This season, the rains were inadequate. Farmers have almost nothing to harvest. They are now reluctant to plant again. Famine looms large.

I Am the LORD: I Do Not Change

The past week demonstrated just how inconsistent the weather has become. On one day, the sun was scorching the earth. The following day, temperatures plummeted and it drizzled almost the whole day. On the day that followed, the sun returned energetically.

In a world where even the weather cannot be relied on, it is comforting to know we have an unchangeable God. He says, “For I am the LORD, I do not change. Therefore, you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob.” (Malachi 3:6).

Because of the LORD’s Mercies we are not Consumed

Humanity is largely responsible for global warming and climate change, the reasons for volatile and unpredictable weather. However, because of God’s unconditional love and inflexible nature, He often protects us from the extreme vagaries of the weather.

We can trust our consistent God because He has control over the unpredictable climate. Because He is our Creator, He knows when and how to intervene. While He will not gloss over all our mistakes, He shields us from the worst of consequences because of His mercy.

For that reason, we can conclude with Prophet Jeremiah, “Through the LORD’s mercies we are not consumed. Because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning. Great is Your faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:22-23).

Prayer
Father, because of Your unchangeable nature, I can face tomorrow. I praise You for that.
