And again He said, “To what shall I liken the kingdom of God? It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal till it was all leavened.”
Luke 13:20-21 (NKJV)
Jesus used common examples to teach spiritual truths. For instance, He used leaven to demonstrate the transforming effect of the kingdom of God in the individuals who embrace it. While Jews associated yeast with sin, Jesus employed it to explain heaven’s character transformation formula.
Transforming Effects of Yeast on Dough
The Lord stated, “To what shall I liken the kingdom of God? It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal till it was all leavened.” (Luke 13:20-21). Leaven or yeast was a common ingredient in the Jewish kitchen because bread was a staple. Wives and mothers listening to Jesus on this day must have appreciated His analogy.
A little amount of leaven inserted in dough was enough to enlarge the bread within a given time. Yeast worked from the inside to the outside by penetrating the dough and transforming it into a bigger portion. This happen, not in one sudden event, but in a silent process.
External Behaviour Change
The kingdom of God works in a similar manner. When we allow the Spirit of God into our hearts, He performs a role similar to that of the leaven. The Holy Spirit renews the mind gradually. He influence our thought patterns and attitudes. Gradually, our speech and character begin to change into the divine image.
Heaven’s character transformation formula us unlike the human approach. Normally, a human being approaches behaviour makeover from outside. For example, if we realize we have anger issues, we can avoid the vice for several days but eventually we will fall into the same traps because of our human frailties.
Understanding Heaven’s Character Transformation Formula
To attempt to conform to the will of God through external methods is an exercise in futility. God-approved behaviour change begins from the heart (mind). God Himself initiates the process. It is an act of self-righteousness (which God detests) to try to earn God’s approval
through our supposed good works.
What negative character traits are you struggling with today? Are there vices you have tried to stop and virtues you want to adopt but your efforts have failed? Do you desire to live in tandem with the will of God? Your solution lies in adopting God’s formula for character transformation. Invite the Holy Spirit into your heart and you will experience genuine change in though, speech and conduct.
Prayer
Holy Spirit, come into my heart today and transform me into the person You intended me to be.
