Unless You Bless Me

And He said, “Let Me go, for the day breaks.” But he said, “I will not let You go unless You bless me!”
Genesis 32:26 (NKJV)

Jacob had dedicated his life to pursuing his goals of stability, prosperity, and his father’s approval. However, we encounter him grappling by himself at night with a heavenly being. It is a war that rages till daybreak, a spiritual and physical conflict that would permanently transform Jacob.

I Will Not Let You Go

Jacob refuses and pleads, “I will not let you go unless you bless me,” he says, holding on despite his weariness and wounds. This instance demonstrates Jacob’s desperate need for God’s blessing, which is obtained via patience and surrender rather than dishonesty or human effort.

Jacob’s perseverance in his struggle with God teaches us a valuable lesson. We are frequently exhausted by life’s challenges and tempted to lose hope, withdraw in disappointment, or give up on God’s promises. Jacob’s perseverance, however, makes us ask: Do we cling to God in the face of adversity? When answers don’t appear to come quickly, do we still pray? Do we desire not only His blessings but also His presence?

Unless You Bless Me

God permits hardships to change us rather than destroy us. After this experience, Jacob hobbled away, this time with a new identity—Israel, the ‘one who prevails with God.” Because he struggled and wouldn’t give up, he was blessed. Continue to pray. Continue to believe. Continue to have faith. God will transform you, bless you, and guide you into a closer relationship with Himself if you don’t let go of Him.

Father in heaven, Lord, I know that You are the source of my power and life, so I will not let You go unless You bless me.
