Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
1 Kings 19:13 (NIV)
Fresh from destroying the prophets of Baal at Mount Carmel, Prophet Elijah faced another threat. Queen Jezebel vowed she would kill Elijah. The man who had called fire from heaven fled for his life.
Elijah journeyed forty days to Mt Horeb, looking for refuge away from Jezebel. Finally, the exhausted prophet crept into a cave to spend the night.
It was here that God asked Elijah one of the most important questions every human being will ever have to answer. God asked, twice, “What are you doing here, Elijah? (1 Kings 19:9 & 13).
God was rebuking Elijah for losing focus. “Is this where you should be? Why did you abandon my people after showing them the path back to me? How does this fit into your calling as a prophet?”
In 1 Kings 19:10 & 14, Elijah evades the question and offers excuses. He claims to have been the only one worshipping God, hence His life was in danger. He resorts to self-justification and blames others for his actions.
Today, God poses the same questions to us, “What are you doing here? Is this where I sent you? Are you in the calling or vocation I purposed for you? Are you working where I placed you?”
Let us turn the question inward and ask, “Am I fulfilling God’s purpose for my life? Is my faith where it should be, considering my walk with God so far? Am I where I should be in my commitment to God and service to humanity?
What am I doing here?
Father, please redirect me to my purpose for being on earth.
God has good purpose for each of us. It is only the free will given to us that has costed us the purpose of God towards our living.
Thanks for reminding me to remain focused.
Indeed he has, Duncan. God bless you.
Please Lord when we turn to the left or right, let us hear the still small voice behind us redirecting us to the way
