What Can Mere Mortals Do to Me?

Daily Devotional – Sunday, June 15, 2025
In God, whose word I praise—in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?
Psalms 56:4 (NKJV)

People can say things that cut deeply. They can disappoint, reject, betray, and even try to tear us down. When faced with such circumstances, David wonders, “What can mere mortals do to me?” The psalmist has made a choice to trust the Almighty God.

I Know Who is in Control

Sometimes we give other people way too much power in our lives. We let their words define us, their actions shake us, and their opinions control how we feel about ourselves. David, however, flips that upside down. He says, “I trust God. I’m not afraid. What can people really do to me?”

He means that people don’t get the final say. They don’t hold our future or get to write our story. God does. Moreover, because He is on our side, no human being can take away what He has in store for us.

What Can Mortals Do to Me?

Granted, trusting God when you are scared or hurt isn’t always easy. However, when we stop obsessing over what people might do to us and start focusing on who God is and what He has already done for us, everything shifts.

Are you afraid of what someone might say or do? Have you been carrying the weight of someone else’s words or actions? What would it look like to fully hand that over to God and let Him defend you?

Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me trust You more than I fear people. Remind me that no one has the power to undo what You have spoken over my life.
